January felt a lurch as the vehicle began to move, and she grabbed the edge of the truck bed for stability. At first she was excited - something that had been created during her time on board the Scavenger vessel had been rekindled. These machines were masters of the desert, the kings of the overworld crafted from steel and glass and rubber. The sands passed by with a speed January was not accustomed to. Once, she even felt a gag of what could have been motion sickness, but it was hard to tell as there was little-to-no stomach bile to regurgitate. She quickly leaned her head over the side of the truck but nothing came up.

When the excitement faded, the speed became normal, and each sand dune began to look identical to the last, January felt the drowsiness close in on her.

She welcomed it, finally, making sure to position herself in a safe enough position for slumber. She was safe, she believed, for now, and three weeks' worth of dreams came gushing eagerly to the surface of her fatigued mind.

The truck glided silently over the dunes, the blowing wind the only noise that accompanied the light tread of the quad-tracks. Horan silently steered the contraption toward the sacred city. He was more than excited at being so close, but what was he going to say or do? It was not like his halfsister could understand any but a few words of his language, and everything out the window was... tan or a light blue tinged with the fading colors of sunrise. His disinterest was not surprising, he had felt like this for nearly half the voyage.

He shook his head and steered around the steep slope of a dune. There didn't look like there was anything around for miles. Where did all of the vehicles from before go?

In her dream, January found herself back in the desert. She was gliding as opposed to shuffling, and the sand flowed past inches beneath her feet.

Looking around, she found herself back at the glass farm. Huddled shapes slung their tools down into the glossy mass of blackness, chipping and cracking beneath their feet. Sand coated the fields and visibility decreased horribly. January covered her eyes.

Her mother came to her. The woman's eyes had sunk into her head, and she was crying sand. January's younger brother hugged her foot, watching with blank expression as she hacked away at the solid glass. January called, and the old woman turned to face her.

"Mitanda," she said, and dissolved into sand.

The entire scene, the silhouettes of the workers, the glass, the distant walls, even the cries of those too slow to evade the Overseers' switches, were swept away in the sea of grains and wind. January was alone once more, and the sun was rising.
