| my teacher just said that if you put a pop in the freezer it would explode because the gas leaves the liquid
you know, the gas that also contracts due to lost energy, and takes up less space.
totally doesn't have anything to do with, say, freezing.

| I've had violent fizzovers from frozen sodas, but more often they just come out flat. | |

| Well, it's been a while since I've had chem, but that sounds right. Carbonation suspends the gas inside the liquid, which for reasons that 10th-grad honors chem does not cover, does not actually increase the volume of the liquid (dissolving any solute up to saturation does not increase the volume of the mixture). Cooling down the solvent reduces its ability to hold as much solute, and it becomes super-saturated. In that state, a small disturbance would cause the solute to be ejected from the mixture, resulting in an increase in volume despite the cooler temperatures decreasing the volume of the air already outside the mixture (sodas are carbonated to super-saturation, which is why they bubble when you shake them).
SCIENCE
Granted, I'm not sure if that would be enough to explode the can. It would certainly cause a bigger rush of air when you open it, and it explains why frozen soft drinks go flat. But generally, it probably shouldn't be enough pressurization to actually explode it.

| Or the bottle.
But I guess that's why the liquid that's left when my frozen coke melts tastes like shit. Though then again, it's also diluted to all fuck from the general melting of the ice.

| Dinh, the total volume would increase... If the temperature weren't so low. The gasses shrink. I'm sure at some temperature it would explode because of that, but it's more likely to explode because of the liquid expanding, or to just not explode at all.
Also, yes, the carbonation is the reason flat pop tastes like shit.

| That's why I said I wasn't sure. I don't know if the rate of decarbonation is greater than the rate that the gas shrinks. | |

| 123ppm to be denoted as Diluted to all Fuck? | |

| Eh, the reason the can explodes is because the liquid expands. The liquid expands, and even though the volume of the gas is lowered, you have more frozen liquid expanding, also pushing the gas. The can explodes. But I would not blame the gas for that, but the freezing liquid. | |

This could catch on. I'd love to see EOD training "That bomb goes off, you're going to be hit with 6.7 lbs. per square foot, which equates to 2.3 Pressured as all fuck!" "For a brick falling from the Empire State Building to reach terminal velocity, it must first be going fast as all fuck" I'm so immature. Screw it. I'm taking finals. I'm stressed as all fuck.
