I'm planning to get Arma III, mostly to support the devs after that terrible incident in Greece.

Yeah, and you'll probably get a fair bit of enjoyment from it if you like a game where you have to think, and where it has consequences. Although, it's not as... hardcore? as previous titles. At the moment, movement has no inertia, and the infantry controls are basically like your generic fps, along with a few stances and whatnot. I'm not sure I'm liking it.
However however however, it makes up for that in increased graphics, increased fluidity of controls, and new features (especially scuba diving. Ermagerd, it's beetiful.) And I can always get the Advanced Combat Environment 3 Mod when it comes out.

Well, my history with FPS has been pretty, absent. I've come to despise pretty much all of the TF2 community, never had any multiplayer experience anyway.
I think this will be a nice change, something not so bandwidth demanding and all that. I could do with a decent FPS that is actually very generously priced.

It calls itself a 'simulator', which I think is rather accurate in the earlier games. Made by Bohemia Interactive, who do make a lot of simulators, including the infamous VBS2 (infamous in the Arma Community, that is.) It's very interesting how they can do much larger projects than other companies, with a far lower budget.
I'm not sure how much of a simulator it is at the moment, but it is an Alpha, so who knows? Not even Santa Claus can divine it with his mystical magic of telepathicality.
I actually want to use VBS2 now that I've started tlaking about it.

I've not had much luck with the franchise since I got ARMA 2. It was mostly a whole lot of spending five minutes running to where the action was because there weren't enough vehicles, and then getting shot when I got there. Military shooters don't sit well with me, but if they've reduced the travel times, then maybe I'll consider 3.

Argh... The map is a lot bigger. Since Arma 2's biggest map was Chernarus, at an impressive 200km squared, and you found that large...
The main map, Altis, is 270-something kilometers squared. Not to mention you may be spending a bit of time out in the ocean, due to scuba diving...
It's a specialty, I admit, that you have to acquire. You have to put up with quite a few bugs, and a 1-shot can kill idea that is terribly annoying. And intense.
Jester, ArmA stands for Armed Assault, a sequel series of Operation Flashpoint : Cold War Crisis. It is a military simulator (really halfway between a game and a full-on simulator) created by Bohemia Interactive, who create many other simulations including VBS2, the simulator used by a lot of militaries worldwide for training, teaching, etc. (Including Australia. It's good to know that I can relate to soldiers... Because they're gamers!)
It allows you to take up a variety of roles, including: Fighter Jet Pilot, Helicopter Pilot, Sniper, Tank Operator, Infantry, etc etc. It allows you to achieve a goal in any way possible, as long as you have the resources.
It's difficult to explain without a butt-ton of effort.
Edit: As a side-note, don't take the trailer as a true representation of the final product. Not just because it's still an Alpha, but because BIS has always been terrible at making exciting trailers.
