Ever wanted more data space on your computer hard-disk-drive? Or wanted to fit back-ups on only one disk when they normally fit on dozens? This may be a very helpful technological advance.

In short, DVDs use bumps to store data. These bumps are made and read by a laser. Laser beams can only make a spot so small (~500nm), and this has been the limiting factor for optical media. However, a clever idea circumvents that limitation. Two lasers are fired- one that is normal and one that is doughnut shaped. The doughnut laser doesn't read or write on the disk, but it cancels out the central laser which does read/write. All that is left of the central laser is the 'hole' in the doughnut laser. This beam is a tiny 9nm, allowing for a data increase from 4.7 GB to 1000 TB.
