| Saunders and the squad reach the first phase line along their patrol route...
"Alright, call it in," Saunders told Caj.
"White King this is White Rook," Caj said, "White King this is White Rook, over."
"This is White King, over," The voice on the radio responded.
"Phase line green, over" Caj replied.
"Roger, Phase Line Green, over," the return call answered.
"Roger out," Caj replied.
Saunders had been studying his map during the radio call. "We'll take five, and then we have to get going again."
"Hey, what's your hurry Sarge?" Kirby asked.
"Something doesn't feel right," Saunders answered, "it's too quiet." Saunders knew that in any heavy forest it's normal to hear the sounds of birds all the time, but if something had come through and frightened all the birds away, then the forest would be quiet, as quiet as it was now.
What Saunders didn't know was that the Remnant Brigade that was moving through the area and towards the base had frightened all the birds. He also didn't know that he and his Squad had inadvertently walked right into the center of the most forward elements of that Brigade.

| Krang was about half way to the human base when he found the remains of a small town, it wasn’t very big. It looked like most of the buildings were in ruins, which wasn’t surprising since the remnant never left any stone unturned. It looked like it used to be an old country town, alone an old 2 lane road. He went in to the only building that still standing, it was an old house that look like it would have been pretty run down before the war started.
Krangs looked around, not for anything in particular, but he still needed something to cover his eyes. His eyes weren’t distinctively remnant, but they are a little more blue then most human eyes. He walked in to the living room; it was pretty picked over, just a bare floor with nothing but a busted TV and an old couch. He went in to the kitchen and could see empty cabinets and a fridge with a dead body in it. It looked like he was thrown in to it by what he was guessing was a remnant.
Krang went over to the body, it was mostly bones now with the cloves he died in, krang searched him over. He found his empty wallet and a pair sun glasses, he put the sunglasses on and looked around the rest of the house but found nothing of use. He went back outside and started heeding in the direction of the base.

| Kymer folded his wings and went into a dive, extending them again in time to come in for a graceful landing. He neatly folded his wings up against his side and looked at Rook for a moment before glancing around a bit. He wasn't quite sure what to say. | |

| The Squad had just reached the top of a hilly knoll when the first shot rang out. By reflex the trained team dropped to the ground into a prone position, each team member pointing his weapon in the direction of the shot.
In the very next second another shot rang out from a different direction, and then automatic machine gun fire from a third direction.
Saunders knew this was bad, receiving fire from three directions meant at the least that the enemy had discovered the team and had the upper hand, at worst it could mean a planned ambush but that seemed unlikely since the shooting had started sporadically and then slowly increased.
"Return Fire!" he ordered, and immediately Kirby opened up with a deadly burst that cut down a Remnant Trooper who was trying to move to a covered position behind a tree.
Caj followed right after Kirby, his first shot passing through the head of a Remnant trooper who was in a prone position 100 feet downhill from him.
Little John, Doc, and the others also began to pick off several of the Troopers but Saunders was not encourage. "They just keep coming!" he said to himself, "They must be a company or higher."
"Sarge, what are we going to do, there's hundreds of them!" Little John asked.
"Conserve ammo! Make every shot count!" Saunders yelled to the Squad.
"Johnson!" Saunders yelled to the RTO, get HQ on the radio. Unfortunately, at that very moment, Pvt Johnson was hit by a plasma blast from a Remnant's beam rifle and died instantly.
Saunders crawled to Johnson's now headless body. Prying the radio from his dead, stiff fingers and dialed in the HQ frequency. "Thunder Bird this is Tiger 1, over..." Saunders explained the Squad's situation to HQ, that they had stumbled into a Remnant company plus element, that they were taking heavy fire from three directions, and that they were running low on ammo.
"Thunder Bird," Saunders said, "If you don't send a Quick Reaction Force to extract us, we'll all be dead within 30 minutes..."
