Think of being a paladin as being a glorified police officer, only accepting bribes will basically cut your powers off.

Oh boy, in all technicallity, the essentials paladin, IS the cavalier. Standard 4e, I don't know, but it still makes LG mandatory, so...

Wait. What? Go into more detail there please. The Cavalier was in AD&D, got dropped in AD&D 2.0, and unofficially was brought back in 3.5 I think. They're the ones who are completely honorbound and will face a legion of orcs by themselves. Paladins will go against honor if their god says so. Tons of people tend to confuse Paladins for Cavaliers, so I'm not sure where 4e stands.

The essentials books have the Paladin, subclass, Cavalier.
